ask

write about an issue,
i was asked.

it's a simple topic really.
we discuss what we think is
so wrong,
so right,
so often,
so we write our answers.

“wear something less revealing”
“don’t be so ghetto”
“if you didn’t eat a bat”
“you’re just asking for it”
“your braids aren’t professional”
“boys will be boys”

answers we think we know to questions we’ve never cared to ask.

ask the black girl why she still gets teased at school for her braids.
ask the muslim girl why she flinches when anyone outstretches their hand towards her hijab.
ask the black boy why he’s afraid of being pulled over, never driving over the limit.
ask the middle eastern boy why he’s “randomly” checked at security.
ask the chinese girl why she’s being attacked for an illness she doesn’t even have.

ask me why i’m not scared of having an eight-hour investigation while crossing the border.
ask me why i’m not yelled at in the streets for something i didn’t do.
ask me why my hairstyle isn’t a political opinion.

why is the colour of my skin automatically something that makes me innocent?
why should i be the one that walks through life without a stereotype?
why should i take a step without a clawed hand pulling me back?
why should i get to be the bird that sings, when so many others are stuck in cages?

why do we pick our biases like one would pick an apple?

why are we asking questions we can’t answer, but deciding our opinions are right?
