Gunshots and Hope

Bang. The sound rips through the air
Sending signals to your mind
And it seems that you’ll soon find
You know exactly what it is

Hearts racing, fear, and worry
Like a hurricane, the feeling takes you by storm
Leaving you terrified when you hear it
Screams.

These are stories I hear on the news
The discrimination against my people is real
The hate, the pain and the hurt that we feel
Sorrow.

Another one gone, Another one bites the dust
In a split second, they’ve disappeared,
their souls departing from the wind
Shame

Minds wander back to 150 years ago
Memories, Stories being told
Slaves being sold
Suffering

These are stories I hear on the news
The discrimination against my people is real
The hate, the pain and the hurt that we feel
Sorrow.

I look between us, your race and mine
There’s not many differences that you’ll find
It’s just a mindset, in their minds
That when a black man walks by he’s looking for trouble
It’s a country that’s been split into two sides, torn up, turned to rubble
When you look on the inside instead of the skin I think you’ll find
There really isn’t a difference between your culture
And mine

Amends can be made
Forgiveness is a gift
If we change our ways maybe the cycle can shift
Hope
Like a caterpillar
Down on the ground for now
But with time can grow
Into something beautiful
